The need for more housing was a consistent issue during the Council’s first-ever Iowa Rural Summit in November 2017. So, Council members jumped on a bus one day this summer to see how four communities were addressing their housing needs: State Center, Marshalltown, Grinnell and Newton. From upper-story downtown housing to loft apartments to new single-family developments, each community is tackling head-on their self-identified housing shortages. Council members now have concrete examples of strategies that work.

Another recent IRDC project was commissioning a feasibility study to convert a school in Goldfield to housing. The study is currently underway and more information will be available soon!
